The council has given the green light to a large four-storey hotel in Corby’s Adrenaline Alley, the largest urban sports centre in Europe.

The sporting venue was established 21 years ago in Corby and moved to its current location in 2016. Adrenaline Alley says it attracts more than 80,000 visitors each year, with more than 70 per cent travelling from outside the area, including many international visitors.

It added that adding short-stay accommodation was the ‘natural next step’ for improving the facility and customer experience.

The ‘Rampside Rooms’ will provide short-stay accommodation for riders and their families visiting the indoor skatepark, which is located on the Weldon North industrial estate.

The tall building would provide 24 individual rooms with various bed configurations, including two wheelchair-accessible units.

The complex is made up of three buildings that offer sporting facilities for activities such as skateboarding, scooters, and BMXs.

The proposed hotel block will be located on a currently underused hard-standing area between two of the buildings on the existing site.

Each accommodation unit will include sleeping space for up to five guests (dependent on layout), a bathroom, and kitchen space. To ensure there is dedicated parking for overnight guests, 24 additional parking spaces will be added to the existing car park at the venue.

The applicant said that the hardstanding that will become the site of the hotel block has been ‘under-used’ and ‘neglected’ for years, and hopes the new building will establish a ‘positive relationship’ across the space.

It added: “The chosen location also has a prominent street frontage and repurposing this area will give the alley the street level awareness it has always desired.

“Locating the rooms as close to the action as possible will enrich the value of their experience while training and having a comfortable resting place during their visit.

"Delivering a purpose built facility to accommodate riders and their families will not only enhance the customer’s experiences, it will also benefit the charity.

“Widening the pool of potential customers the alley will attract and lengthen customer stays and the proposed accommodation will unlock new income streams for the charity.

"The development will positively contribute to the local environment and economy, supporting the long-term goals of Adrenaline Alley as a leading urban sports facility.”

North Northamptonshire Council approved the plans last week.
