New day centre for adults with learning disabilities to open in Corby

A new day centre for people with learning disabilities is due to open in Corby later this year.

Brookside, an award-winning provider of day services and opportunities to help adults live independent lives will open a centre of excellence in Corby Old Village in May.

The High Street building, the former home of the Much Loved shop, boasts a huge workshop and a selection of smaller rooms perfect for group activities, project work and development sessions.

There is also a split outdoor space which will be used by clients to grow and manage plants and produce and a sensory garden.

Members of the public will be able to purchase items manufactured by users of the centre as part of a social enterprise scheme.

Rebecca Robinson, service manager at Brookside, said: “There is a huge demand in the community for inclusive, outcome-led services.

"By working with a person and their circle of support we can promote and support independence, life skills and contribute to planning for the future.

"We look at the bigger picture and try to work with everyone involved to make sure people get the opportunity to maximise their potential and be the best they can be.”

The fully accessible 4000 sq ft ground floor building, has the capacity for 30 sessions to be held every day, themed around helping users, aged between 18 and 65, build independence, develop friendships and grow in confidence.

Staff are dedicated to improving health and well-being and providing opportunities for ‘real-world’ work experience.

Rebecca added: “We recognise that each person has individual outcomes and aspirations.

"We do not offer generic support, it is all bespoke.

"I feel that by working with our clients and empowering individuals to make decisions and take risks, we are able to see people succeed every day.”

Brookside already caters for adults with learning disabilities from its existing centre in Market Square, Northampton.

Providing a modern environment with areas for activities and quiet reflection along with social spaces for communal times, it is hoped the Corby centre will mirror the success of the Northampton facility, which was awarded the Regional Healthcare Project of the Year in 2017.
