New chapter begins for Wollaston Library

Supporters of the new volunteer-run Wollaston Community Library gathered yesterday (Saturday, February 1) to mark the re-opening of the village's public library.

Library users, volunteers and special guests toasted the venture's first day in its new guise, and cheered as a special celebratory cake was cut.

Nick Sinnott, leader of Wollaston Community Library group, was presented the keys to the building.

He said:"I would like to thank everyone who has had a hand in supporting us.

"Thanks to all the volunteers, those from Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) who helped us and to all those who do such sterling work.

"If it wasn't for the 'friends of' group that morphed into the fundraising thrift shop, we wouldn't be here. All the volunteers have done a fantastic job."

Local author Gareth Coombs was joined by children's writer Julia Jarman in offering their congratulations to the library team.

Ms Jarman said: "My heartfelt thanks go to all who helped made the survival and revival of the library possible."

Mr Coombs, who grew up in the same street as the library, said: "It's an absolute honour to be here and to see the library revived is a tremendous credit to those who made it happen.

"Thank you for this display of community."

More than 50 people crammed into the library in Newton Road which will be managed and run by volunteers with books and computers provided by NCC.

Chair of Wollaston parish council Lindsay Alvis thanked Mr Sinnott for all his work.

Mr Alvis said: "I think it was an awful decision by NCC to withdraw their support, they should support the public library and education.

"The new-look library is absolutely fantastic. It's great to see it continuing in the community, providing a location and great base in the village.

"The council will always support the library financially should the need arise."
