Murder investigation continues in Northamptonshire 'sleepy' village as neighbours express shock at 'tragic' incident

A murder investigation is continuing in a Northamptonshire village the day after neighbours discovered the ‘tragic’ incident in their community.

Northamptonshire Police had charged local man James Daniel Bird, 50, of High Street, Chelveston, with attempted murder in connection with the incident on the morning of Monday, February 2.

Sadly, following the attack inside a property in High Street, a woman died yesterday (February 10) and police launched a murder investigation.

Today, residents of the quiet village near Raunds and Rushden said the first they knew about the investigation was from reading about it on Facebook.

One neighbour said he didn’t know Mr Bird but he was aware of the police presence earlier last week.

He said: “We knew something had gone on because my wife had seen loads of police and they had blocked the road. It's shocking. I've lived in the village for 16 years and we don't know who he is.”

Another resident had been away at the time of the original incident but she had heard emergency services had been called to the village.

She said: “A friend said there were police and ambulances. It's tragic. It's sleepy hollow here. Nothing like this ever happens.”

Bird, 50, was remanded into custody following an appearance at Northampton Magistrates Court on Wednesday, February 4.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Matt Bly, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone who loved this woman at what is a very distressing time and specially trained officers are supporting her family.

“Although we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her murder, I would ask anyone with any information to contact us.”

Anyone with information can contact Northamptonshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
