Man who assaulted woman in front of children and sent death threats in ‘targeted campaign’ jailed and handed restraining order

A man has been handed a prison sentence of four years and one month and a five-year restraining order after a targeted campaign against a woman in Rushden.

Mohammed Miah, 42, of no fixed address, was found guilty following a trial on August 1, and on November 4 he was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court.

He was also issued with a five-year restraining order which prevents him from contacting the woman.

PC Steve Lane from Northants Police, who led the investigation, said: “Mohammed Miah’s intolerable behaviour was totally unacceptable, and I would like to praise the courage and strength of this woman.

“I hope this sentence provides her with the chance to rebuild her life without living in fear of Miah and I also hope it sends a strong message to other perpetrators that we will act against anyone who engages in this type of behaviour.”

Between April 21 and June 14 this year, Miah had repeatedly assaulted the woman, who remains anonymous, in front of her children. Police say that on at least one occasion, he placed both his hands around her throat, strangling her.

Miah threatened to inflict a serious facial injury on the woman in a bid to get his own way, during a telephone call, and in the weeks that followed he persistently sent unwanted calls and messages, despite her asking him to leave her alone.

Miah called the woman multiple times on June 13, and when she answered after repeated attempts to ignore the calls, Miah threatened violence against the woman and her family, and made a threat to kill her.

On June 14, Miah called the woman more than 50 times before spotting her driving with her children.

Miah got out of his vehicle and demanded she unlocked the door. After the woman refused, Miah was verbally abusive and aggressive, banging the door.

He was arrested by officers from Northamptonshire Police when he left the scene andwas later charged with engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, stalking involving fear of violence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, and possession of a knife blade/sharp pointed article in a public place after autility knife was found inside his vehicle.
