Loo roll ribbon cutting launches Kettering community toilet scheme for town centre shoppers
A ribbon-cutting ceremony with a difference has launched Kettering community toilet scheme for high street shoppers that was far from bog standard.
The Community Toilet Scheme is aiming to improve access to clean, safe and welcoming toilet facilities for all residents, shoppers and visitors – with no need for them to spend a penny.
Co-ordinated by Kettering Town Council (KTC), the scheme encourages local businesses and organisations to open their facilities for public use during their normal operating hours, free of charge and with no obligation for individuals to purchase goods or services.
KTC leader of Cllr Lee Watkiss, cut the loo paper ribbon at The Geek Retreat, one of the participating businesses and delivered the window sticker to show shoppers their credentials.

Cllr Watkiss said: “This scheme reflects our commitment to ensuring that Kettering town centre is a welcoming place for everyone. Access to clean and reliable toilet facilities is a basic expectation, and by collaborating with local businesses we are able to offer modern, well-maintained and conveniently located toilets throughout the town.
“It supports our town centre economy, encourages footfall, and ensures that residents, families, older people, those with health conditions and visitors can move around the town with greater confidence and comfort.
“We want people to enjoy Kettering without barriers. Whether someone is out shopping, attending an event, spending time with family or simply passing through the town centre, they should feel confident that facilities are available when needed. This is a practical and community-minded solution that benefits the public, supports local businesses and contributes to a more vibrant town centre.”
Each venue displays a Community Toilet Scheme sticker at its entrance, allowing members of the public to easily identify locations which offer access.

Currently, the following venues are taking part Kino Lounge, Geek Retreat, The Peacock, Café Amore, The Newlands Centre, and the Municipal Council Offices.
Dan Powell from the Geek Retreat said: “We are really happy to join the scheme because it’s something we have experience with and know the need for public amenities.”
And there are more venues in the pipeline. KTC is continuing to talk to local businesses, cafes, restaurants and public buildings about joining the scheme, with the aim of establishing a comprehensive network of accessible toilet facilities across the town centre.
Information about participating venues will be shared on the Kettering Town Council website www.ketteringtowncouncil.gov.uk/toilets as well as window stickers and signage in the venues and across town.
A spokeswoman for KTC added: “The town council welcomes feedback from residents and businesses and encourages any venue interested in joining the scheme to contact the council for further information about how to participate by emailing [email protected].”
