A proposal to demolish a brutalist seven-storey high-rise building in Corby has been submitted to the council.

The former steelworks office block at Weldon Road is one of the town's highest buildings but has been out of use for many years.

In 2018, it was proposed that it would be turned into Corby's first high-rise apartments to become part of the overall Deer Park scheme that would see 90 homes built on the site as well as a shop and recreational facilities.

But the Deer Park plan was rejected by Corby Council's planning committee because they said it was unsuitable for residential development due to its proximity to the steelworks and the sewerage works and the distance from other residential areas and amenities.

There was nothing they could do to stop the residential conversion of the office block because the government allows offices to be converted to housing without planning permission.

An appeal has been submitted to Corby Council against their planning decision but the developers MPB Structures say that if they can't get permission to convert the whole site, they plan to totally demolish the existing tower block.

An application to Corby Council says that they intend to carry out the works between May 1 and July 1 by using an excavator. Work will take place between 8am and 6.30pm on weekdays and between 8am and 4pm on Saturdays.
