The patients were aged between 60 and 91 but the hospital's statement did not address whether they had underlying health conditions.

A KGH spokesman said: "Sadly, we can confirm that 12 patients being cared for at our hospital aged between 60 and 91, who had tested positive for COVID-19, have died.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the families and friends of those patients at this very difficult and distressing time."

Three of the confirmed deaths took place on April 3 with a further one the following day.

April 5 was the most devastating day with five deaths, followed by a further three on April 6.

Nationally NHS England confirmed a further 765 people who who tested positive for the coronavirus have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 7,248.

Patients were aged between 24 and 103-years-old. In total 43 of the 765 patients (aged between 33 and 99-years-old) had no known underlying health condition.

The figures do not include deaths in the community or at care homes. Two residents who had tested positive at Brockfield Nursing Home in Stanwick recently died at the home with another two residents dying in hospital.

Elsewhere in Northamptonshire a further four deaths were confirmed at Northampton General Hospital.

A request by this newspaper to release figures for the number of coronavirus admissions and discharges at the county's two hospitals was declined by the Northamptonshire COVID-19 Strategic Coordination Centre earlier this week.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson was put into intensive care earlier this week after he remained unwell having tested positive for the virus. Dominic Raab is currently standing in for him.

Earlier today Northamptonshire Police's chief constable said he would be ramping up enforcement of coronavirus regulations and that his officers will need a ‘reasonable explanation’ when a member of public is asked where they are going and why.
