A Kettering DJ who has dedicated his free time to fundraise for a much-loved Kettering tourist attraction has been given another award for his efforts.

Damian Cox, owner of Big Bopper Entertainment, put his fundraising and publicity efforts into supporting Wicksteed Park after its operating company went into administration last year.

For his hard work, helping to raise more than £160,000, Damian was nominated for a 'Rose of Northamptonshire' award given to people in the community that go above and beyond to help others in Northamptonshire during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Damian also won the ITV West of Anglia Pride of Britain regional fundraiser award last year, but he was overwhelmed to be given a county award.

He said: "I am proud and humbled to be given the award. It's very special. To be nominated for any award is amazing but because it's a local award for the county that makes it even better."

In a virtual ceremony, 'Big Bopper' accepted the award from High Sheriff of Northamptonshire Paul Parsons in the award recognising those who have worked tirelessly to help others during the pandemic.

The citation for the award said: "Damian is a local guy, very well liked by so many and has a great following through both his business and personal life.

"Damian raised awareness to save Wicksteed Park, and is currently working as a marshall at the local Covid testing centre due to not being able to work at his own business of Big Bopper Entertainment.

"He is willing to give his time and support for the local people of Kettering. Damian is a great guy with a big personality and deserves recognition for always being there for others.

"The people of Kettering will know just how hard Damian has worked to organise support for Wicksteed Park and how well deserved the award is."

As well as fundraising for Wicksteed Park, 43-year-old Damian has been bringing people together by hosting free online family quizzes on Sundays with 30 teams joining the fun - fitting them in around working at the Covid testing centre.

He added: "The Pride of Britain was for the team, but this one is for me."

The Rose of Northamptonshire awards scheme was designed by Northamptonshire County Council and its leader, as well as the formal institutions of the High Sheriff's office and Lord Lieutenancy, to recognise that many across the county have committed themselves to response and relief efforts since the beginning of the outbreak.

The awards seek to highlight those in every sector and locality of the county that have played a key role.
