A Remembrance service in Kettering will be live streamed next month after the usual public event was cancelled because of coronavirus.

Because of the pandemic the Remembrance Day parade and service, which would usually be attended by hundreds, cannot be held safely and a decision has been made "with a heavy heart" for them not to go ahead.

Instead a short, private service will be held by the Royal British Legion's Kettering branch, working with Kettering Council, on November 8 with invited guests laying wreaths.

It it will be live streamed on This is Kettering's YouTube channel from 1.30pm on November 8 so that the public can watch it in the safety of their own home.

The event will be available to watch live on This is Kettering’s Youtube channel. The small, private event is being organised in line with the strict Government guidance. To remain Covid-19 secure, members of the public will not be able to attend the event.

Kettering mayor Cllr James Burton said: “The Remembrance Day commemorations in Kettering provide an important opportunity for our community to pay its respects to those who gave their lives for others.

"Although the event will be celebrated differently this year to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors, I encourage you to watch the commemorations online to honour this major part of our history and the importance of the sacrifices that were made.”

Ian Hunter, joint chairman and secretary of the Royal British Legion's Kettering branch, said: “Remembrance Day 2020 will be very different from past years due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

"However, it shall not stop the citizens of Kettering and elsewhere from remembering the fallen of all conflicts. Their sacrifices made our world possible.

"As the Kohima Epitaph says “When you go home. Tell them of us and say. For your tomorrow we gave our today”. Remember and pay your respects by joining us online in the safety of your home this year, please.”

The Memorial Gardens in Kettering will be open as normal members of the public who wish to pay their respects in private, before 12noon and after 2.15pm on November 8.

The gates to the gardens will be closed in between these times to facilitate the small, private event.

A Kettering Council spokesman said they are keen to ask members of the public not to turn up at 11.00am, in line with previous custom and practice.

They said that as public safety is of paramount importance, their advice is to make alternative plans this year and to watch the event from home if possible.

They said: "We would kindly ask all those who usually take part in the event to stay safe and watch the event online to help prevent the spread of Covid-19."
