Kettering emergency briefing on climate change backed by local comedian James Acaster

Kettering residents are being invited to an emergency briefing on climate change, followed by a community discussion on how people can ‘fight back together’.

The People's Emergency Briefing is being screened at Kettering Arts Centre, St Andrew's Church, on Wednesday, September 30, at 7pm.

The film lays out the ways climate change is likely to affect lives including food, energy bills, the temperature of buildings and the threat to national security.

Hosted by Kettering Town Council, the film features celebrities like Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden and Jennifer Saunders, together with world-leading experts in extreme weather, renewable energy and food security.

Local organiser Siobhan Currie said: “It's great to have all the up-to-date information about climate change, but it's even better to share our concerns and ideas with each other.

“It's not all doom and gloom, there are things we can all do individually, and they will have even more impact if we do them as a community.

“If you're worried about climate change, come along and hear some of the solutions.”

The film also explores some of the surprising ways adapting to climate change could save money, for the public and private sector alike.

There has been a lot of interest in the event already and it is being backed by Kettering-born comedian James Acaster, who said: “If you go to this, you are officially cool.”

The film was made after more than 1,200 peers, MPS, business leaders and prominent people from the worlds of culture, sport and the media gathered to listen to experts discuss the implications of climate change on food security, infrastructure, national security and the economy.

Experts explain how communities can take steps to mitigate the damage.

Kettering resident Janet Bew, who will attend the screening, said: "If people had any doubts about the threat from climate change, surely this summer has proved it's real and it's happening now.

“I think it's great we've got a chance to come together to find out what we can do to make a difference."

Northamptonshire resident Jen Coles added: "I think a lot of us feel a bit helpless when it comes to the climate crisis.

“I've heard that our response needs to be on a similar scale to the Second World War, and to me that means we really need to work together. This event gives us a chance to do just that."

During the meeting there will be an opportunity for people to discuss what they have seen and short presentations by various local environmental groups.

The event is suitable for ages 16 and over. Attendance is free, but spaces are limited and advance registration is required.
