A support dog who suffered a reaction after he was stung by a wasp was saved thanks to quick-thinking staff at a Kettering cafe.

Chyna, an eight-year-old bichon frise chihuahua cross, goes everywhere with owner Kirsty Jordan and the pair were heading to The Blitz Tea Room in Sheep Street after a walk at Wicksteed Park on October 9.

Just before midday Chyna was stung by a wasp and suffered an allergic reaction, hiding under a table and shaking as his leg swelled up.

A vet said he needed a Piriteze immediately, but with Kirsty on crutches after seven major back operations she was helpless.

And with Chyna deteriorating baker Reza Horri sprinted to get the medicine the pooch needed as tea room owners, sisters Jasmen and Jarmen Avedisian, cleaned the affected area.

A grateful Kirsty, 50, said: "I was in bits. It can be a matter of life or death.

"They (the vet) said you need to run but I was on crutches and couldn't get anywhere.

"The man who worked there (Reza) ran into town as fast as he could and got it and then ran back.

"We gave Chyna the Piriteze and within 15 minutes he was recovering. It was so fortunate. I dread to think what would have happened if I was at the park or stuck on my own."

Chyna, who accompanies Kirsty to every hospital visit, has since been resting at home and has recovered after the worrying reaction.

Kirsty, a former Kettering market trader, said she couldn't thank staff at the 1940s-themed tea room enough.

She later went in to present them with a bunch of flowers, chocolates and a card.

She said: "I would be lost without him. I have had Chyna since he was seven-weeks-old and he knows when my legs are going to give way and keeps me calm.

"He is irreplaceable."

Cafe owner Jasmen said: "Kirsty was panicking but when Reza gave Chyna the antihistamine he got much better.

"Chyna is such a lovely dog and we love seeing him when he comes in.

"Kirsty got us some lovely flowers. We just look out for each other - we have to these days."
