A Kettering bin collection crew made a boy's birthday dreams come true by surprising him on their round.

Charly Drewry, who turns nine today (Saturday), loves vehicles and bin lorries and always waves to refuse collectors on their round near Windmill Avenue.

But when they came to collect his bin on Tuesday (March 16) he was not expecting what would happen next when he went outside.

After his mum Carlie, 32, contacted Kettering Council the refuse collectors wished him a happy birthday and gave him a card and a gift.

And mum Carlie said he hasn't stopped talking about it since.

She said: "It was so kind of them and it's made our week, and it's definitely made his birthday."

It's been a rocky year for Charly, who has additional needs and attends Kingsley Special Academy, having been thrown by being unable to be at school for many months.

But the act of kindness from the bin collection put a smile on his face - and he'll also be given a tour of the bin lorry when Covid restrictions are eased.

Carlie added: "You don't realise how much a little bit of kindness can cheer someone up.

"We're really thankful for what they've done. They've gone out of their way to put a smile on Charly's face."
