Kettering area pensioners set to receive winter fuel bill grants thanks to town charity

A total of 252 pensioners living in Kettering and Barton Seagrave have been given help with their winter fuel bills thanks to a town charity.

The funding comes from Kettering Charities for the Poor, that has been running for decades and can trace its history back to the nineteenth century, and is run by Kettering Town Council.

Successful applicants will receive a payment of £70 each, an increase of £10 on last year – a total of £17,640.

Chair of the trustees, Lloyd Bunday, said: “We are proud to continue this long-standing tradition of supporting those in need during the colder months. Heating costs can be a real worry for many older people, especially those living alone on a limited income.

"These grants make a difference by helping ease that burden and ensure people can stay warm and comfortable. Kettering Charities For The Poor has been serving the community for generations, and remains committed to helping those who need it most.”

Grants to help with winter fuel bills were applied for by people who must fit with the historic charity’s criteria.

Applicants must not have more than £335 income per week, excluding benefits, they must be over the statutory retirement age of 66 and live alone in Kettering or Barton Seagrave.

In 2022 payments were £68, with 300 successful applications for payments. A year later 250 pensioners received a payment. In 2024 a total of 289 residents were successful.

Leader of Kettering Town Council, Cllr Lee Watkiss, added: “Kettering Town Council is pleased to support this initiative, which helps some of our most vulnerable residents stay warm and safe this winter. Rising energy costs have put extra pressure on households, and schemes like this provide practical help where it’s needed most. We value the partnership with Kettering Charities for the Poor and the positive impact it has on our community.”
