Kettering anti-social street drinker banned from High Street for FIVE years after 'poor behaviour'

A Kettering man has been banned from areas of the town centre for five years after his 'poor behaviour' being intoxicated from both drink and drugs, urinating, defecating and being abusive.

Leon McKenna of Carey Street, Kettering, was issued with a criminal behaviour order (CBO) after repeated incidents of anti-social behaviour in Kettering town centre.

The 54-year-old came to the attention of Northamptonshire Police in late 2024 due to his persistent street drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

His behaviour included drinking in the town centre which has a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in place, littering, being intoxicated from both drink and drugs, urinating, defecating, being abusive and generally behaving in a disorderly manner.

PC Tracy Maltby from Kettering’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We take anti-social behaviour and street drinking within the town centre very seriously, and we do not take issuing these orders lightly - a multitude of steps including support is offered prior to going down these routes.

“In order to get a CBO granted, it takes persistent offending and a clear pattern of poor behaviour. The five-year order which has been granted shows the consistent level of offending Leon McKenna has committed and I am thankful the court has recognised this.

“Although his behaviour can be classed as ‘low-level’, the constant nature of it, with the added anxiety of when there will be an escalation, is a blight on the businesses, the customers and the people living and working in the area.

“The town centre currently has a large number of individuals with numerous community conditions and we will continue to enforce those conditions in order to reduce street drinking and anti-social behaviour. Our main aim is to ensure the town centre is a safe place and obtaining this order will help in doing that.”

As a result of his behaviour, he was issued with a community protection warning in May 2025, and when this was breached, a community protection notice was issued in August 2025.

However, McKenna continued to breach the notice, resulting in multiple complaints from members of the public whose trips into the town centre were blighted by his behaviour and local businesses regarding loss of revenue.

The CBO against him means he is not allowed in certain parts of Kettering town centre, including Dryland Street, Market Street, High Street and Gold Street.

He is also not allowed to associate with specific individuals in a public place, consume alcohol or have any open container of alcohol in any public place, be in a group of two or more likely to cause harassment, alarm, distress, nuisance, and/or annoyance, or be under the influence of drugs or alcohol in a public place within Northamptonshire.
