Huge increase in litter and broken glass at Higham Ferrers' open spaces

People are being urged to respect Higham Ferrers' open spaces after a huge increase in rubbish and broken glass being left behind.

Higham Ferrers Town Council is asking residents to take their rubbish home and look after the green areas of the town which are enjoyed by so many.

It is also appealing for people to stop removing the temporary fencing at the skate park, which is there for people's safety and well-being yet is being removed on a daily basis.

A spokesman for the council said: "We are getting reports of a huge increase in rubbish and most concerningly broken glass in our open spaces, especially Saffron Road rec ground.

"Our park wardens are up there at least once a day and are doing their best to keep it clean but the scale of the issue is increasing.

"Please take your rubbish home with you if possible and keep an eye on the ground, especially if you're walking dogs.

"We're also aware the skate park temporary fencing is being removed on a daily basis and we remind you that it is still closed, for your own safety and well-being, and we ask you to observe that closure until it can be safely lifted.

"Please have respect for the open spaces that we all use, and if you see anti-social behaviour call 101 immediately."

Lockdown has seen many people visiting their local parks and green spaces, and the nicer weather has also led to an increase in people wanting to get outside.

While the town council wants people to enjoy the open spaces, they are urging people to take their rubbish home or use the bins provided, not fill bins with rubbish from home and keep within the government guidance for social distancing.

People are also reminded that the town's play areas remain closed in accordance with government guidance.
