A new shop and petrol station is to be built on a derelict site that has been empty for three years.

The forecourt and Co-op convenience store will be built on the northbound side of Burton Road, Finedon, after it was given the nod by Wellingborough Council’s planning committee.

A statement from the applicant to the Northants Telegraph said: “Unoccupied since 2017, the old building will be demolished and a new service station built, operated by The Co-operative Group.

“The new service station will feature six pump lanes and a Co-op store selling a range of groceries, ready meals, sandwiches and snacks, beers, wines and spirits and a range of fresh fruit and vegetables.

“Development is expected commence during autumn 2020 and the site will be operational during early 2021.”

A report by officers to Wednesday evening’s planning committee said: “The application seeks to demolish the existing building and canopy and remove all the existing petrol filling station tanks and infrastructure to replace it with a new petrol filling station with three new double sided pumps, canopy and retail building along with associated parking and infrastructure.”

Northamptonshire Police said the shop’s cigarettes and alcohol could be a target for burglars and asked for security to be put in place to a ‘reasonably high standard’.

There were eleven letters from local residents - most in support of the application. They said it would be good for the village and that the increase in traffic through the village could support a petrol station.

Three locals raised objections to do with issues including the impact of external lighting, parking and concerns over 24-hour opening.

There has been a filling station and car showroom on the site as far back as 1959.
