School may be out but one Kettering 16-year-old isn't using it as a chance to sit at home or play football with his mates.

Devon Abrahams, a pupil at Kettering Science Academy, is putting his summer holiday to good use by organising a huge sponsored clean-up of our town's streets.

He is appealing for an army of volunteers to join him on the litter pick on Saturday (July 25) - and raise vital cash for Accommodation Concern in the process.

The schoolboy said: "I've always wanted to do something that's positively influential for the world.

"I believe that there is so much that I and everyone else can do to make the world better.

"Problems like homelessness and environmental interference deserve more attention than we are giving them so I want to encourage many like myself to aspire to resolve these issues."

The event starts at 11am with those taking part meeting at the park field by Christ The King Church in Deeble Road.

They will then walk more than 7km along Windmill Avenue, Barton Road, London Road, Montagu Street and Stamford Road, with a stop for lunch, picking up as much rubbish as they can.

There will be points on the journey where volunteers will split into smaller groups to explore and clear large areas such as The Grange.

Devon's mum, Michelle Robertson, said: "I and the rest of the family are very proud of him.

"For the past year, Devon has taken it upon himself to do weekly litter picks of the neighbourhood and he has also been donating the majority of his savings to other community causes like Cransley Hospice and The Samaritans.

"This is definitely the start of Devon's journey as we are definitely going to see more of him yet."

Devon hopes to raise more than £500. You can donate to his cause here.
