Deer killed by two dogs at Stanwick Lakes as owners asked to be ‘extra mindful’
A deer was attacked by two dogs at Stanwick Lakes, and its injuries were deemed ‘so catastrophic’ that it could not be saved.
The attack happened in an area where dogs are allowed to be let off the lead, but must be under close control at all times.
Leaders at Stanwick Lakes say the dogs were not under close control, and the owner did not inform anyone of this incident.
The ranger team received a report from a member of the public last week and called for veterinary advice straight away, but were unable to save the deer, which was left suffering for about 40 minutes.

A Stanwick Lakes spokesman said: “We’d ask all visitors to be extra mindful at this time of year, throughout spring, ground-nesting birds are especially vulnerable, so please keep to the paths, even if your dog is friendly.
“We love welcoming dogs to Stanwick Lakes – but we also have a duty to protect the wildlife that calls this place home. Please keep dogs on leads across the nature reserve.
“Only let them off in the designated area, and only if you’re fully confident you can maintain close control.
“To all of our lovely dog walkers who already abide by the rules and respect the wonderful wildlife here, thank you. Your help and consideration is very much appreciated.”
Stanwick Lakes staff are taking steps to address ongoing dog misbehaviour with new signage across the site, and working closely with the regional dog warden to ‘ensure the right support and guidance is in place’.
Visitors are asked to only let dogs off the lead within the designated area, and only if confident close control can be maintained at all times.
