Corby school launches food bank to help families in need
Beanfield Primary School is launching its own food bank to help those in need or at crisis point.
Each student is being asked to take along one item to contribute so there is a good initial stock and further donations from parents, families, the community or local companies will be gratefully received.
It is believed that Beanfield is the first school in Corby to set up its own dedicated food bank.
It means that parents of children who attend the school can be helped if they are unable to access the town’s existing food banks, due to their opening hours or difficulty with transport.
Beanfield’s food bank will be open for 48 weeks of the year, supporting school families that need it.
The food bank is the latest in a series of charitable initiatives as at Christmas Tata Steel generously donated money which was converted into vouchers for food and presents for the neediest families.
Wellbeing manager Sarah Fleming said: ‘We are always hearing in the news about families struggling and we want to make sure that we do everything we can to make sure that they aren’t families at Beanfield.
"If as many children as possible can bring a tin or packet of something then we can begin to stock up.
"As well as food we will also be grateful for bottles of squash, toiletries and household essentials.
"We recognise that asking for help isn’t always easy so we want to make this sensitive situation as stress-free and easily accessible as possible.
"If families of our students get in touch we will sensitively judge their needs and make up parcels of essentials for them, as well as maybe helping them to access further support.
"I’d like to thank the site team who have put shelving and lighting in the food bank so it is all ready to go on the official launch day on Monday 20 January.
"I’d also like to thank our school community and staff for their generosity and support for this venture.
"Each donation will make a huge difference to families who are in crisis, ensuring that they can put food on the table."
Donations to Beanfield’s food bank can be left in the Wellbeing Office at any time.
