Pupils and staff at two Corby schools have raised more than £1,000 for a defibrillator for their estate, with a heart-filled 'Restart a Heart' day.

Children from Danesholme Junior and Infants used their Valentine's Day to fundraise for the life-saving equipment helped by Community First Responders, in support of the nearby Viking Club.

Stacey Price, North Northants Community First Responder volunteer co-ordinator who attends 999 medical emergencies, organised the Restart a Heart Day in partnership with the academies.

She said: "It's been an amazing day. The children have really engaged with us. It's been so positive to teach the children first aid and we've raised money too.

"We covered breaks, bleeds and sprains, infection control, and showed the pupils round an ambulance that East Midlands Ambulance Service kindly provided."

The Year 5 and 6 children had sessions covering CPR and defibrillator instruction led by seven members of the North Northants and East Northants Community First Responders.

Joining in the CPR training was the mayor of Corby Ray Beeby and mayoress Toni Beeby.

Pupils raised money by wearing mufti and bringing in silver coins to cover a heart-shaped template.

Staff also joined in with a sponsored heart-racing speed bounce challenge with PE lead Mr Park managing 106 jumps in one minute.

Karen Rolf, principal of Danesholme Junior Academy, said: "It's been a really good day for the children learning essential life skills.

With £1,271 raised jointly by the two schools, the Viking Club appeal only needs another £229 to reach their target.

First Responder Stacey added: "This is not just about raising funds, this is about showing the pupils how we come together as a community and to allow them to contribute towards a life-saving piece of equipment that consequently may save someone in their families' lives one day."

The precious life-saving equipment will be installed outside the Viking Club and will be accessible day and night.
