Corby MP Lee Barron visited Corby Town FC to show support for Pitching In, a charity that looks to support grassroots football.

The Steelmen have stormed to a commanding lead at the top of the Northern Premier League with six wins in seven games so far this season and Corby’s MP Lee Barron was there to see his constituency side take on Worcester City in a 2-0 home win.

Lee was there to support Entain’s Pitching In, a charity designed to support and promote grassroots sports.

The programme launched at a time when football clubs and sporting organisations were facing the unprecedented impact on their finances of the Covid-19 pandemic and have continued since then.

Lee said: “It was great to go to The Steelmen game at the weekend and meet representatives from the sponsors, the Northern Premier League, and of course Corby Town FC chairman Stevie Noble.

"During the day I met lots of volunteers who keep the club going and also met with the supporters who are running the clubhouse who showed me how to pour a pint of lager.

"There is a great community spirit at the club and I look forward to seeing a few more games this season.”

Pitching In representative, Finn Rogers, said: “We sponsor 280 clubs and there’s three aims to it. First is, we’re the sponsors of the Isthmian northern and southern leagues.

“Then we have the volunteer hub website, which is why we’re here today with the local MP - and that’s basically a website where clubs like Corby, they might need volunteers to do the stewarding or selling tickets, they can put that advert on the website in the hopes that people would see that and come and get involved.

“Third, we have the Trident Community Foundation grants where clubs can apply for grants up to £5,000 in relation to community initiatives.

“So it’s basically just a good way for local MPs to come down to their local club, meet their constituents and see the great work like Corby Town are doing in their local constituency.”

Northern Premier League representative, Paul Hatt, said: “We’re just grateful for Pitching In’s support in this and hopefully Lee’s had a good day, it’s good to see an MP getting his hands dirty.

"It’s important for Lee and MPs across the country to understand what their local club brings to that community, so these are important visits and it’s just good as the league to support both Pitching In and the local MP in that work.”

Stevie Noble, club chairman at Corby Town FC, said: “I think it’s nice for the people of Corby to see him standing here watching the Steelmen and he paid to get in so I like the cut of his jib.”
