Corby house fire damaged gas main and electrical supply, cutting off 200 homes

Firefighters tackled a Corby house blaze and helped treat a man for smoke inhalation after an incident in Crick Close.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a fire involving fencing and a wooden lean-to at the back of bungalow shortly after 5am on Saturday (July 18).

When crews arrived they found the fire had spread and damaged the outside of the property and the main gas and electric intakes.

Cadent staff were called to the scene and identified a leak in the gas supply which had been caused by fire damage, and neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution.

A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters found that everyone was accounted for, but one man was suffering with smoke inhalation.

“He received oxygen from the fire service prior to the arrival of paramedics.

“Crews used hose reel jets to douse the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further and used fans to clear smoke out of the property.”

After neighbouring properties were evacuated, the decision was taken to isolate gas and electricity to the area, which led to a power outage affecting roughly 200 properties.

Cadent monitored gas levels in the affected property while fire crews remained to check any remaining hotspots from the fire throughout the morning.

Once gas levels and temperatures were deemed to be safe, fire crews returned to their stations shortly before 1pm.

An investigation has found that the fire started accidentally.
