Corby Grow Festival a whole spectrum of amazing art, music and performance - and a free trip to the moon

Organisers of a free festival of light have promised a wonderful and surprising time for people of all ages who attend the Grow Festival in Corby.

A spectacular spectrum of light-based art experiences, including a giant moon, will be dotted around town centre venues with pop-up performances of music and street theatre.

The two-day festival includes a special lunar experience with a massive reproduction of the Earth's nearest neighbour - the moon - being housed in the Core Theatre.

Marian Anderson, from Grow Corby said: "It's going to be one of the most exciting events ever to happen in Corby. Come along and have a wonderful time. There's something for everyone of every age and every taste, and a surprise around every corner.

"From our lantern-making workshops to so many Instagram moments, there really is going to be something for everyone and plenty of places to warm up in our indoor venues."

Starting on Tuesday 'Museum of the Moon' will be on show in the Core Theatre at the Corby Cube, a 7 metre-wide (23 ft) moon has been installed and visitors can sit and watch the lunar landscape accompanied by a specially composed soundtrack.

Events start during the day on Friday, February 7 with art created during collaborations between local people and artists including Metro Boulot Dodo 'Overview Effect and Underview Effect' in Willow Place - a projected animation celebrating the 1969 moon landing and Pen Green Nursery pupils' mixed media creation 'This Little Light of Mine',

Once dark, the light-inspired street festival will culminate at 5pm, when Spark! - a band of illuminated drumming characters - will lead a dazzling lantern parade through Thoroughsale Woods from James Ashworth VC Square to Corby Boating Lake, past a menagerie of illuminated creatures.

At the water's edge, visitors will be able to see Egg Illuminations' installation 'Fire Dream' which depicts a dreaming woman's head sleeping in a nest of fire, guarded over by actors dressed as bee keepers, and a musical shamen.

The following day, Saturday, February 8, the festival continues when a plethora of strange creatures will be roaming around the town centre including giant rainbow-coloured birds, a snow queen, ghostly caribou puppeteers.

High above shoppers gravity-defying 'Heliosphere' will be spiralling and spinning, seemingly weightless, with an acrobat suspended beneath.

Moving around the town centre will be giant illuminated cones whilst buildings will becoming huge screens for locally-written poems from the Angels - Feelings From Home project and projected for visitors to enjoy.

Families can pop into the Corby Cube on Saturday to take part in high-tech Alien Pop workshops with RS Components in the Council Chamber, create some ‘out of this world crafts’ at Corby Library or enjoy the harmonies of popular community choirs Big About Singing (at noon) and Deep Roots Tall Trees (at 1pm) at the People’s Stage.

Visitors can experience a sensory installation using infra-red sensors to create an orchestra or play a sound-painting in Eye Music Trusts’ Symphony Of The Senses and enjoy a special performance by children from Red Kite Academy.

Grow Festival is a series of three outdoor arts festival commissioned by Made in Corby, as part of The Creative People and Places programme funded by Arts Council England through the National Lottery, and co-produced with The Core at Corby Cube. In its third year, the project will be steered by The Core’s Youth Advisory Panel, facilitated by The Core at Corby Cube and Made in Corby. Made in Corby’s aim is to inspire more local residents to take the lead in experiencing, creating and participating in high quality arts and cultural activities.

The Museum of the Moon can been seen: Tuesday, February 4 from 11am to 7pm; Wednesday, February 5 11am to 5pm; Thursday, February 6 from 11am to 7pm; Friday, February 7 from 6pm to 9pm and Saturday, February 8 from 11am – 5pm.
