Corby falls silent at tonight's vigil in memory of Rayon Pennycook

'May Corby come together to carve out a better future for each person'

A vigil to remember the young life of Rayon Pennycook took place tonight in Corby.

Attended by friends and loved-ones, the moving event outside the Cube was a chance for those who knew Rayon, and the wider community, to mark the passing of the 16-year-old who died of a single stab wound on May 25.

Pastor Andrew Rashford-Hewitt, who led the service, said: "As we all heard the news of Rayon's passing there was a sense of shock that something like this could happen in Corby, in our community.

"This is our town. It feels wrong that something like this could happen.

"There may be raw feelings of desperation, of anger, a sense of great loss, and our thoughts go out to the family of Rayon for his life taken too soon.

"It would be wrong just to carry on as normal so the fact we are all here tonight shows that we are not happy with what happened.

"May we as a community choose not anger or rage or hostility, may we choose to walk in love.

"May Corby come together to carve out a better future for each person."

Women from the church sang "God Will Take Care of You," and Andrea Rashford-Hewitt paid tribute to Rayon with her version of Amazing Grace.

Pastor David Midzi from Corby's Living Faith Temple recited Psalm 23 and spoke of how Jesus would leave his flock to find one lost sheep.

Candles were passed around and the crowd fell into a moment's silence to remember Rayon.
