A beloved pet dog from Corby who needed life-saving medical treatment is back home with her owner after the operation was a complete success.

Peppa Pug was days from death with owner Tony Clenaghan unable to pay the £855.39 required until a fundraiser was set up by a friend to foot the bill.

The five-year-old pug rescue dog had been used as a breeder and had been diagnosed with pyometra - a life-threatening infection of the womb.

It was the third in a series of terrible events for Mr Clenaghan after he fell off his bike and shattered his leg and his father Billy died after his mobility scooter was hit by a car at a pelican crossing in Oakley Road.

Mr Clenaghan said: "She would have died without the operation. I'm just blown away by the support and I would like to thank you for saving my dog's life.

"She's my best mate. Her appetite is brilliant. She's back to being happy - when she sees someone she barks to say hello and run up to them.

"Before the operation she was dragging her feet. She's got back her life."

Mr Clenaghan, 49, had intended to get Peppa spayed but lockdown followed by his accident and his dad's death meant it never got done.

He said: "When I went to pick her up the vet chastised me for not getting her spayed. For the sake of 120 to 130 quid it's such an important thing to do. The disease can be fatal."

Sam O'dell who had set up the Facebook funding page for Peppa said: "I'm really pleased. I remember when he first had her she was jumpy and wouldn't settle. Now she's a happy dog.

"I would like to thank everyone for donating. Without them it would have been impossible. He can finally relax - you have saved this little pug's life.

"I would also like to thank Northlands vets in Corby. It can be very stressful when a family pet becomes ill, and having a caring, compassionate vet that takes individual circumstances into consideration, can make all the difference.

"I wish her a long and happy life with Tony."
