A Black Lives Matter protest due to take place this weekend in Corby has been cancelled due to a rise in coronavirus cases.

Corby BLM (Black Lives Matter) had been scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 5 but organisers have decided to avoid the risk of further transmission.

A spokesman for Corby BLM said: "Due to the news of rising cases of Covid-19 in Corby and Northamptonshire, we have made the tough decision to cancel this Saturday's protest.

"As much as we want to hold this, and to see all your support for the BLM movement, we feel it would be remiss of us to ignore the risks associated with the virus.

"Once we are confident that the infected numbers have fallen and risk of transmission is lessened, we will look to reschedule."

A protest in Northampton's Abington Park by Togtherness, a group promoting equality, social justice and change, has also been cancelled for tomorrow afternoon (September 5).

The first Corby BLM protest in June attracted hundreds of peaceful protestors in the wake of the death of George Floyd in the USA.
