Colourful trail of yarn bombing helps spread some cheer in East Northants village

A team of crafty ladies have helped spread some cheer by decorating their village with dozens of knitted items.

An array of knitted items are dotted around Woodford, adding a splash of colour to church gates, railings and telegraph poles.

The yarn bombing, a type of street art comprising of colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk, is the handiwork of the Women of Woodford.

Lynn Sortwell from the group, which was formerly the WI, told the Northants Telegraph: "In 2019, Women of Woodford, decorated the village green for Woodford Feast week.

"We planned to do the same this year with new additions.

"Unfortunately Covid intervened and there were no 2020 celebrations.

"However, lockdown meant finding things to do that didn’t involve mixing with other people so crafting was ideal.

"The ladies really pulled all the stops out and over 30 different items in the village were adorned.

"Church gates, railings, telegraph poles and benches were all covered.

"The NHS ones really showed what we were thinking at the time.

"We decided to put them up for the August Bank Holiday weekend and received lots of positive comments."

And Lynn added: "It has really cheered the village up and we are planning to leave it till the end of the month so that everyone gets a chance to see it."
