CCTV to be installed in Kettering park where Ryan Burton was murdered

New CCTV cameras will be installed in a Kettering park that became the scene of a murder in a bid to enhance public safety.

North Northamptonshire Council’s (NNC) planning committee approved plans to install two new cameras in the park last night (February 11).

The local authority said the green space had seen a rise in incidents and that the CCTV would deter crime and anti-social behaviour and provide a level of reassurance to park users.

Cllr James Towns (Green, Kettering Central), who sits on the council’s planning committee, said he was fully in support of the application.

He told the meeting: “There was a serious crime earlier last year in this area and I think it’s quite important there should be reassurance for the local residents and users of the park that this area is being covered and there are eyes watching this area.”

Cllr Maurice Eglin (Reform UK, Barton Seagrave and Burton Latimer) added: “If it prevents any more crimes happening in the area, we’ve got to be fully behind it. Residents come first.”

The CCTV cameras will be sited at each end of the park and monitored by staff in a secure location.

The enhanced safety measures have been funded through the Clear, Hold Build Approach by the Office of the Northamptonshire Police Fire and Crime Commissioner.

PFCC Danielle Stone told the LDRS: “This has been a partnership project with North Northamptonshire Council to help make residents using Spring Rise Park feel safer.

“My office are funding the purchase and initial installation of two CCTV cameras that will overlook the park, while the subsequent upkeep will be managed by the council.”

According to planning documents, Northamptonshire Police have also backed the proposals.

The plans for the CCTV cameras were approved unanimously by the council’s planning committee.
