Care home for adults with learning disabilities rated 'Good' in all areas

Perrywood House in Kettering specialises in caring for adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome, learning disabilities and autism.

A care home in Kettering has been rated 'Good' in all five key areas by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Perrywood House specialises in caring for up to seven adults with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), a genetic condition that gives people an insatiable desire for food which can sometimes result in life-threatening obesity if people do not have specialist support.

The home also cares for those with learning difficulties and autism.

The care home was rated 'Good' in all five key areas

Claire Miller, service manager at Perrywood House said: "I am extremely proud of our team whose commitment, hard work and passion for putting the people we support at the heart of everything we do and enabling them to enjoy a great quality of life has made this result possible.

"We are delighted that the inspector noted our person-centred and inclusive culture, rating us ‘Good’ across all five key areas."

Inspectors spoke to five residents of the home, two of their relatives and nine staff.

They said that people's care, treatment and support promoted a good quality of life for residents.

One relative said: "I am very happy with their care, they have made good friends and always seems happy when we speak on the phone."

The inspectors also reviewed people’s care records, as well as medical records and records relating to the management of the service.

Inspectors found people's needs were known and supported and one person said: "Staff are very good at supporting [a resident] to keep their weight down, which is essential for their condition.

"Staff are careful with the quality and quantity of [their] food."

The home was also praised for having good leadership, with more staff employed when it was noticed that there was not enough.

One member of staff said: "I love this job, now I get more time for interactions [with residents], they are a brilliant bunch."

Perrywood House is one of 15 specialist PWS services operated by Consensus in Northamptonshire, four of which are rated Outstanding by the CQC.

The care home has seven bedrooms and has been developed to support residents to live as ordinary a life as anyone else.

Inspectors praised the home for giving people mazimum choice and control of their lives.
