A group of Corby firefighters armed with sponges, buckets, mops, wash cloths, squeegees and hoses have chammied there way to raising an amazing £2,025 for charity.

Red Watch, led by commander Craig Douglas, helped by a small number of volunteers wash more than 350 assorted vehicles including cars, vans and even a double-decker bus.

Such was the popularity of the event they had to close early to avoid congestion on nearby roads - four buckets were filled with cash during the six hours.

Mr Douglas said: "I feel like we washed every car in Corby. People were throwing ten and twenty pound notes into the bucket. Lawson's brought a bus for us to wash which was in all good humour. I made a cheesy playlist for us and the visitors to listen to and we waved at all the kids.

"The car wash was absolutely exhausting. I told the team - look we are not going to get a break but there are people who are climbing mountains and running marathons so we can wash some cars. We were constantly wet and damp but it was just a magnificent effort."

Due to the Covid restrictions, the annual fire station open day, a huge fundraiser, was cancelled.

All money raised will go to the Fire Fighters Charity appeal to help support the mental, physical and social needs of all serving and retired members of the UK's fire services.

Mr Douglas added: "We can not thank everyone who supported us enough. Once again the people of Corby have shown how generous they are. This little town always does us proud."
