Breast reconstruction medics, who treat women from Northamptonshire, have thrown a surprise party to honour a Wellingborough charity superstar.
Glennis Hooper, Crazy Hats founder, had arranged to visit the Plastic Surgery Department at Leicester Royal Infirmary to hand over a copy of her newly-published memoirs.

But instead of a quick catch-up, the department surprised Glennis as a thank you for the tens of thousands of pounds donated to their wards.
Glennis said: “I thought I was visiting to hand over a copy of my book to my consultant Mr Varma who did my breast reconstruction 20 years ago.
“I did pass on my book to him but the whole department suddenly appeared. I was just so honoured that they wanted to go to those extremes – they are busy people.

Crazy Hats funded the refurbishment of a waiting area in the unit where women who have had breast reconstruction surgery attend for dressings, follow-ups and nipple tattooing procedures.
The treatment area has been refurbished with wall art, seating and fans.
Glennis said: “Their thank you to us involved every member of the ‘Plastics’ team coming together to show their appreciation - consultants, nurses, secretaries, registrars - everyone. It was a little overwhelming and emotional as I was not expecting this but it made me feel so proud.”

Glennis added: “I have received some lovely feedback about the book. People say they can relate to many of the situations I went through and I’ve had quite a few people contact me from people who have just been diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s been amazing.”
