Arson investigation after cars set alight in Corby causing 'inferno'

An arson investigation has been launched after two cars in Corby were destroyed by fire in the early hours of today (Monday, March 2).

Residents in Sandby Road, on the Hazel Leys Estate in the town had been alerted to the incident after hearing explosions from outside.

This morning the burnt out shells of a Vauxhall Astra and a Ford Focus were being guarded by Northamptonshire Police in a cordoned off area at one end of the cul-de-sac, close to a green space.

Kathy Young heard from her home at about 1pm initially thinking the sound was fireworks.

She said: “I heard explosions – I thought it was fireworks. But they carried on. I looked out and I could see it was an inferno.

"I thought ‘oh my God’ and went into the back of the house because you never know what’s going to happen. After about 10 minutes I came back when the explosions had finished.”

Ms Young said she was grateful a nearby fence had been so sodden and the wind hadn’t pushed the flames towards houses and nearby garages.

She added: “The fire engines were here for about half an hour.”
