All change for trolleys at Tesco Extra in Kettering as coin locks return
Shoppers at the Tesco Extra store in Kettering will need to have a £1 coin or a suitable token in their wallets, pockets and cars from next month to unlock their trolley.
The Tesco superstore in Carina Road, off Pytchley Road, will introduce the change in June to reduce the number being abandoned in the town.
It brings the store into line with many other shops that require a refundable £1 or pound-like token to use shopping trolleys to encourage people to return their carts.
Tesco Kettering Community and Events champion Julie Gilles shared a notice on behalf of the store that said: “To protect the environment and keep your local community free of abandoned trolleys, from June 15 (Monday) trolleys in this store will be fitted with refundable £1 coin locks.”
According to the Financial Times, 88 per cent of all transactions are now made digitally via card or contactless payments but over a million people rely on coins daily.
