Oundle OWL talks for a 'greener, cleaner' Earth

The Oundle Waste Less (OWL) project run by Transition Oundle aims to encourage people reduce their impact on the environment.

Their 2020 OWL Talks will feature guest speakers highlighting environmental topics including responsible fashion, allotments, carbon off-setting and de-cluttering.

OWL Talks organiser Camilla Sherwin said: "People think that they know all about the environmental issues but everyone always comes away from our talks having learnt something new.

"Journalist Lucy Siegle, who is on the telly almost every night, will be talking about how to life a greener life especially when it comes to fashion.

"If everybody does a little bit more and adopts lifestyle changes into everyday life it would make a cleaner, greener Earth and make it a better place to live.

"It would make less social disruption and make the world a happier place. We just need to tweak our lifestyles."

The 2020 series begins on Thursday, February 6 with 'Net-zero carbon by 2050? Energy initiatives to keep UK on target', when Nicole Gilbert, head of marketing at Kiwi Power, will describe some of the clever large-scale technological developments which are transforming how the UK's energy is stored and supplied.

Warren Pope, energy manager at Save Money Cut Carbon, will advise what can be done at a household and community level to ensure that the UK meets its target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Spring cleaning will be in the air on Thursday, March 5 when professional home organiser Conchetta Laquintana will talk about de-cluttering.

Guardian journalist and BBC presenter Lucy Siegle will talk about green, clean fashion when she is the special guest speaker at 'The Era Of The Generous Wardrobe'.

On Wednesday, March 25, consumer expert Lucy will share her 'Generous Wardrobe' ethos, based on her documentary and book, a system of dressing and self-expression.

Audience members have been invited to wear or bring an item of clothing that they have owned and used for a long time.

The programme continues with: Closing The Loop – towards the Circular Economy on Thursday, April 2 with a live link chat with sustainability expert Professor Wayne Visser; Carbon offsetting: solution or sticking plaster? on Thursday, May 7 - a discussion with carbon reduction company Terra Neutra discussing the pros and cons of carbon offsetting; on Thursday, June 4, Mary Clear MBE, chairperson of Incredible Edible Todmorden, will talk about the Yorkshire town's project.

Camilla added: "Making lifestyle changes, however small, to reduce our environmental impact should be at the forefront of everybody's minds as we head into the new decade.

"It will be a privilege to hear first hand from so many leading sustainability experts who can help to point us in the right direction – please attend and then consider how you can translate their advice into action."

With the exception of March 25, events are free to attend and held in the Queen Victoria Hall, West Street. Oundle, PE8 4EJ. Doors and the bar open at 7pm. Talks start at 7.30pm
