Kettering (894 claimants) and Rushden (318 claimants) both saw an increase of six per cent, with Corby (764 claimants) showing the smallest increase at three per cent.

The employment rate in Northamptonshire stands at 79.1 per cent, well above the national average of 73.4 per cent.

A spokesperson for Jobcentre Plus said: “The increase in claimants is to be expected with a number of seasonal jobs coming to an end.

“The increase is in line with last year’s figures and we are not overly concerned.

“There are a number of events going on at the moment, especially with the upcoming apprenticeship week from March 14-18.

“This is in line with the aim of having three million apprentices nationally by 2020.

“There is also the recruitment day at Wicksteed Park and we are focusing on construction a lot at the moment.”
