Around 350 homes are still without electricity in parts of Northampton on Friday morning following last night's fire.

Four fire crews of firefighters tackled the blaze at a supply sub-station in Semilong at around 9pm last night.

That sparked power cuts in 4,800 homes in the NN1 and NN2 postcodes.

Western Power Distribution restored supplies to around 3,500 within three minutes but it took until after 7am for many more to get back online.

Re-routing power via alternative networks then sparked another fault on the low-voltage system, leaving 339 homes without electrictity.

An update from Western Power Distribution said: "We've got some supplies back on in Northampton NN1 but are working to restore the remaining properties by approximately 9am. Sorry for the delay."

A number of residents in flats close to the substation in Semilong Road, near the junction of Alliston Gardens, were evacuated as a precaution.

More updates to follow.
