Western Power Distribution restored supplies to around 3,500 within three minutes but it took until after 7am for many more to get back online.

Re-routing power via alternative networks then sparked another fault on the low-voltage system, leaving 339 homes without electrictity.

An update from Western Power Distribution said: "We've got some supplies back on in Northampton NN1 but are working to restore the remaining properties by approximately 9am. Sorry for the delay."

A number of residents in flats close to the substation in Semilong Road, near the junction of Alliston Gardens, were evacuated as a precaution.

More updates to follow.
