New restaurant could open in former home of Rubix nightclub in Corby

Rubix nightclub closed in October after its landlord said the club operators had not complied with the terms of the lease.

But plans have now gone in from Corby Town Centre S.A.R.L for a change of use for the ground floor of 66, Corporation Street, from nightclub to restaurant use.

They state there has been ‘strong’ interest from a restaurant operator who would like to take over the ground floor unit, although the operator has not been named in the plans.

Documents submitted as part of the planning application state: “The nightclub vacated the unit in October 2015.

“The applicant has since received strong interest from a restaurant operator seeking to occupy the ground floor of the unit.

“Assuming planning permission is granted, the operator intends to refurbish the unit and occupy it in 2016.

“Any external alterations will be dealt with by the incoming tenant in due course.”

Rubix and Lounge 66 were opened in early December 2012 by business partners David ‘Les’ Ross and Jon Powell.

But just weeks after opening, Mr Ross was found dead at the Village Express Hotel in The Jamb, Corby, on December 17.

A murder investigation was launched and several arrests in connection with the death have been made, although no-one has been charged with Mr Ross’ murder.

The club remained open, with Mr Ross’ name still on the lease, until the owners of Willow Place and Corby town centre reclaimed possession of the unit last October.

The plans to bring the premises back into use, which will be considered by Corby Council, say: “The proposed change of use would provide the town centre with a new dining option helping to diversify the offer in Corby and thus support the long term vitality and viability of the town centre and enhance its image as a shopping and leisure destination.”
