New mayor for Higham Ferrers shows his support for cancer charities
The new mayor for Higham Ferrers will be supporting a number of cancer charities during his year in office.
Members of Higham Ferrers Town Council elected Cllr Peter Tomas as the new mayor and Cllr Jason Smithers as deputy mayor at its mayor making ceremony on Monday (May 15).
After being elected, Cllr Tomas said: “I am pleased and honoured to be elected as your mayor.
“During my mayoral year I plan to promote our town and encourage all our people to work together.
“Therefore I hope to meet as many of you as possible.
“I call upon all of you to help me to raise lots of money to go towards my chosen charities.”
The charities he will be supporting during the next 12 months are Crazy Hats, the Wellingborough-based charity which raises money to improve care for breast cancer patients at Kettering and Northampton general hospitals.
He will also be supporting a prostate cancer organisation to make men aware of the issue and to assist them with the cancer, and MacMillan Nurses, who provide information, advice and support for people with cancer and their families.
Cllr Tomas added: “I think I am right in saying all of us have been or know of someone who has been affected by the horror of cancer.
“Throughout the year I plan to hold different types of events to involve you all.
“Please help me to raise lots of cash to help as many affected people as possible.”
Cllr Tomas replaces Cllr Pam Whiting, who has held the role of mayor for the past year.
