Inspector Polly Underwood, who is investigating, said: “She was in a terrible state, very dirty with severe fur loss, discharge around her eyes and could barely see.

“Her claws were also extremely overgrown, to the point that one of them had curled right under into her pad.”

The dog, who has been called Doris, is now in the RSPCA’s care.

Inspector Underwood added: “She has had a haircut and is on medication.

“Thankfully she has perked up now and she has found her voice.

“It is terrible that she was left in this neglected state and we are very keen to find out how she came to be like this.”

It is not known exactly how old she is, but she is believed to be an older dog.

Anyone who has any information should contact the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018, leaving a message for Insp Underwood.
