The ‘handgun’ was discovered to be a black and gold toy gun that lit up when pressed.

No offences were committed but officers gave them very strong words of advice in front of their parents about carrying toys that other members of the public may perceive as real weapons.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: “Even though - thankfully - this report turned out to be a toy gun instead of a real one, we hope the local community are reassured that we have the capability to deploy specially-trained armed police officers quickly to incidents of this nature in order to fight crime and protect people.”
