Formula One star Lewis Hamilton writes letter to Northamptonshire pupil after being sent his story

A 10-year-old boy from Earls Barton has received a letter from Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton after he wrote a short story about the motor racing driver at school.

As part of a Big Write project at Earls Barton Junior School, Ewan Smart penned a story about his favourite sport last year.

The story, which imagines Lewis Hamilton winning his fourth championship and celebrating by doing a “million donuts” in his car, was passed on to the driver by an engineer on the Mercedes team, who lives near Ewan’s teacher Phillip Hawkes.

Last Wednesday, the youngster received a reply from Hamilton in which he praised his writing style.

The letter, which he posted on the end of Ewan’s story, read: “Dear Ewan, I love your imagination and that you have predicted the future. I will be working very hard to get the 4th title as you imagined above.

“Keep working hard at school, you are already a great writer. Wishing you all the best. Your friend. Lewis. P.S 1 million donuts sounds fun!

Mr Hawkes said the fact a world famous driver had responded to Ewan had provided a major boost to all the pupils’ interest in writing.

He said: “It is really good for boys to have a role model to give them a genuine interest in wanting to write.

“The Big Write encourages all the pupils to improve their writing by using assessment and setting targets.”

The Big Write initiative was first introduced by acting headteacher Alison Turner last year and has greatly improved reading and writing standards at the school.
