One of Kettering Council's new vehicles was given the name - a play on race car Lightning McQueen from Pixar film Cars - by the winner of the 'Name the Sweeper' competition at Mawsley Community Primary School.

Competition winner Enzo, a reception class student, came up with the name after members of the council’s street cleansing, refuse and recycling team took it to the school and carried out a demonstration to show the children how it works.

Two classes of reception students entered the competition to name the sweeper earlier this year.

Teacher Rebecca Underwood said: “We initially made contact with Louisa at Kettering Council as part of our 'People Who Help Us' topic at school and requested a visit from the recycling team.

"Louisa had previously brought along a recycling truck, but this year was even more exciting for our children in the foundation stage.

"After much deliberation the children whittled the names down to just three - a very tricky task indeed. Enzo was the chosen winner with the name ‘Lightning McClean’.

"Today we were lucky enough to see the road sweeper in all its glory with the new name displayed on the side."

Miss Underwood thanked council staff for the opportunity.
