Visitors are being warned of blue-green algae at Corby Boating Lake.

Signs have gone up at the lake, urging caution after blue-green algae was found in the lake.

A spokesman for North Northants Council said: “Please note, blue-green algae is present in the lake.

"Please keep dogs (and yourselves) out of the water and adhere to the signage in place.

"Please ensure you maintain good hygiene practices when fishing at the lake to avoid any potential harm.”

According to the Environment Agency, bloom and scum forming blue-green algae can produce toxins.

These toxins can kill wild animals, farm livestock and domestic pets.

In humans, they can cause rashes after skin contact and illnesses if swallowed.

While not all blue-green algae blooms and scums are toxic, you can’t tell just by looking at them so the Environment Agency suggests that it’s best to assume they are.

Incidents of blue-green algae blooms or scums can be reported to the Environment Agency’s incident hotline on 0800 807060, which is available 24 hours.
