A litter pick organised by a Kettering teenager cleared 20 bags of rubbish from the town's streets and raised hundreds of pounds for a homeless charity.

Devon Abrahams, 16, a student at Kettering Science Academy, appealed for volunteers to join him on a sponsored litter pick on Saturday, July 25 to clean the streets while raising money for Accommodation Concern.

Devon said: "The event has been a great success. All the litter pickers collected 20 bags all together and we've raised £625 for Accommodation Concern, a charity for the homeless.

"The donation page is still open until Saturday, August 1, so we can still obtain some last minute donations."

Devon was helped out by the Kettering Green Party and member Dez Dell, who provided the necessary equipment for the litter pick.

Kettering Green Party member Emily Fedorowycz took part in the pick with her mum and said: "It was a really lovely idea, and I was really impressed with Devon coming up with it - they’ve raised a huge amount so far and done a great job making more people aware of Accommodation Concern.

"I didn’t know much about the organisation myself before this event and it was great to know that we have a dedicated charity like this helping rough sleepers get a roof over their head.

"At a time like this I can only imagine the struggles of someone sleeping rough, whilst we are being told to stay home, to stay safe, and stay healthy - something that is literally impossible for someone in that situation.

"It’s so wonderful that these brilliant kids came together to raise some money for the cause, as well as do a nice deed for the community."

The litter pickers walked a 7km route as they cleaned the streets.
