Emergency services insight for Kettering students

More than 200 students at Tresham College’s Kettering campus learned about what the emergency services do last Friday.

Representatives from Northamptonshire Police, Northamptonshire Fire & Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service and the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were on hand to give presentations and talk students through some of the specialist equipment and actions used when responding to road incidents.

The aim of the day was to help teach students more about emergency service roles and the actions which take place when there is a collision, as well as educating them about the common causes of crashes and about the potential dangers associated with driving.

They were also given an insight into the reality faced by families and those involved with collisions when someone loses their life or suffers life-changing injuries.

Kettering Fire Station watch manager Graham Ravenscroft, one of the main organisers, said: “Road traffic collisions are a major cause of death for young people, so taking part in this event is an important step for us, in being able to pass on important safety messages and educate the students about the very real consequences that serious crashes can have.

“The day gave young people an opportunity to learn at first-hand what the emergency services do and how they work together in responding to emergencies.

“There was also the chance to see some of the specialist equipment which helps us to carry out life-saving rescues.”
