Shona Smith, 31, admitted burglary after the incident at Halifax in Corporation Street on June 24 this year.

Earlier this month Northampton Magistrates' Court heard Smith, of Queensway in Higham Ferrers, was at the bank when she sneaked into part of the building without permission.

She then stole £2,000 and was later arrested and charged.

But, despite noting the "substantial" amount of money taken, magistrates decided not to send her straight to prison.

Her 18-week jail term was suspended for a year and she must pay the £2,000 back.

Smith must also pay costs of £85 and a surcharge to fund victim services of £122.

A Halifax spokesman said: “We work closely with the relevant authorities during investigations and accept their conclusions in this case.”
