Violent Corby abuser locked up again after harassing female victim

A Corby man with a long history of domestic abuse is back behind bars after failing to heed court orders banning him from contacting his victim.

Geoffrey Butler, of Eastbrook, Corby, who now has more than 30 convictions on his record including for drug driving, fraud and failing to comply with court orders, has repeatedly contacted his victim, despite being the subject of non-molestation orders going back four years.

The 34-year-old was previously jailed in 2023 for strangling and assaulting his victim. A Court of Appeal judge turned down his appeal against his three-year prison term, imposed after he put his hands around her throat and squeezed, leaving her bruised and terrified.

Just months later he breached a restraining order by contacting her from HMP Five Wells, and was given a further 32 weeks on his sentence.

On his release, Butler, formerly of Rothwell, again went back to repeatedly contacting her and has now been before magistrates accused of harassment after breaching the restraining order made back in 2023.

Magistrates heard that he contacted the victim between May 1 and August 4 this year, without reasonable excuse.

He pleaded guilty at a hearing on August 8 at Northampton Magistrates’ Court and was sent back to prison for 35 weeks. He will also have to pay a £187 surcharge.
