Four teenagers have been arrested after a fight between two gangs in Northampton on Tuesday night.

A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: "The incident happened at about 6pm near the Racecourse when a group of boys armed with poles, bats, wooden sticks and knives got into an altercation with another set of boys.

"When police arrived, two of our officers were assaulted. Thankfully they received no lasting injuries.

"Four boys (aged 16, 16, 16 and 17) have all been arrested in connection with this incident and remain in police custody at this time," the spokesperson added.

Detective Chief Inspector Adam Pendlebury, said: “We know this incident will naturally case concern among the local community and I would like to reassure them that we are looking into it thoroughly in order to bring the offenders to justice.

“We do believe that this was a targeted attack and unfortunately, the result of a gang-related dispute.

“Police patrols will be taking place in the local area today and if anyone has any concerns, please do approach one of our officers who will be happy to assist you.”
