Tax evasion scam warning after bogus cops call thousands of Northamptonshire numbers
Police urge public to be on their guard over rise in phone cons
Police are warning the Northamptonshire public to be on their guard following a spate of phone calls from bogus cops.
Conmen have called thousands of numbers claiming there are arrest warrants for tax evasion offences and asking for payments.
Several people who have been targeted posted on Northamptonshire Police social media sites, including one who admitted: "My mum in law had one of these calls, they told her there had been an accident. It upset her greatly."
Another said: "I've been having those for a three weeks now. I've had five calls today all from different parts of the country. Before that I got the tax fraud one."
A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "These individuals are very skilled in these type of calls and the number that is used is presented as the Northamptonshire Police number 03000 111 222.
"Northamptonshire Police will never make these types of calls and will never ask for any bank details or payments over the phone.
"We are asking members of the public to be vigilant if they receive any type of call from individuals stating they are police officers and asking for any type of personal and banking information."
